The dissertation applies some of the sub theories of the reader response school of criticism to four selected plays of Arthur Miller. The plays are I Can{u2019}t remember anything, Clara, Broken Glass and Mr. Peters connections. Deals with Gadamer{u201F}s notion of hermeneutical understanding. It applies the theory of hermeneutics to the chosen plays and tracks Miller{u201F}s characters reaching a hermeneutic perception. Unveils Riffaterre{u201F}s structural matrix, or in other words the deepest layer of sense reached by a competent reader. Like the reader, Miller{u201F}s folks shall embark on a symbolic journey to uncover the matrices of their existence. Just as the reader shapes the significance of a text, the text unquestionably influences him as well. Shall endeavor to trace the effects of the reading process on the reader
