Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Institute of Educational Studies - Department of Curriculum and Methods of Teaching Summary: The current study attempted to assess the difficulty level of English textbooks taught to secondary stage students to find out if they match the reading ability of students. The sample consisted of 760 students of first and second grades of secondary schools, randomly selected from six schools in Giza governorate. Cloze tests, Two readability formula; Fry extended graph and Dale - Chall formula were used as tools to measure readability of textbooks. In addition, another tool called Coh - metrix was used for measuring readability of textbooks. Based on the obtained results, there is an evidence that English textbooks taught to secondary stage students do not match reading ability of students
