Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electronics and Communications Summary: In this work, we investigate the application of reconfigurable antennas to cognitive radio systems, and highlight various scenarios were reconfigurable antennas can improve the performance of such systems. It is shown that reconfigurable antennas can create artificial temporal diversity to improve the performance of spectrum sensing compared to conventional single antenna schemes. Besides, it is shown that using reconfigurable antennas, we can combat the negative impact of Line-of-Sight channels on the capacity of single user and multiuser underlay cognitive radio systems
