Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Summary: The aim of this study is to evaluate the short - term clinical therapeutic outcome of intra-articular injection of sodium hyaluronate versus arthrocentesis in patients with non - reducing displacement of the TMJ disc. The study included 20 female patients with unilateral non-reducing disc displacement, who did not respond to conservative therapy. Selected patients were randomly allocated into two groups; Group I: in which patients received two intra - articular injections of sodium hyaluronate in two weeks interval Group II: in which patients underwent Arthrocentesis (lavage and lysis) patients were clinically assessed on regular base before the proposed procedure, 1 month, 2 months and 4 months postoperatively. Visual analogue score (VAS), Maximum inter - incisal opening (MIO), protrusion and lateral excursions were recorded. Patients of the two studied groups showed statistically significant pain reduction, increase in MIO, contralateral excursion and protrusive movement. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups except for the MIO and contralateral excursion and protrusive movement after 1 month group II had significantly better improvement than group I
