Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Summary: Stroke was defined as a rapidly developing signs of focal or global disturbance of cerebral function, lasting longer than 24 h unless interrupted by death. It usually occurs because a blood vessel bursts or is blocked by a clot. In the present study, the possible neuroprotective effect of resveratrol, donepezil and vitamin E were investigated in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion-induce hippocampal damage in brains of rats. Stroke was induced by occlusion of both carotid arteries for 60 minutes followed by reperfusion for another 60 minutes. Oral doses of resveratrol (10 mg/kg), donepezil (10 mg/kg) and vitamin E (100 mg/kg) were daily administered for 2 weeks. At the15th day of the experiment, animals were anaesthetized with thiopental (50 mg/kg, i.p.). In all rats, both carotid arteries were exposed to occlusion for 60 minutes followed by reperfusion for another 60 minutes except for the sham-operated group in which the tow carotid arteries were exposed without clipping them reactive substances
