Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Biochemistry Summary: Amiodarone is one of the most effective antiarrhythmic drugs. However, owing to its high iodine content, many cases of thyroid dysfunction have been reported following its administration. The present study was conducted to investigate some of the biochemical alterations in serum and thyroid gland, as result of amiodarone administration either alone or in combination with antihypertensive agents such metoprolol (a Ý1 receptor blocker) and amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker). Rats were allocated into male and female groups. Each group was randomly divided into six sub-groups of 8 rats each. Amiodarone (50 mg/Kg b.wt), metoprolol (9 mg/Kg b.wt), amlodipine (0.45 mg/Kg b.wt) and (Amiodarone + metoprolol) as well as (amiodarone + amlodipine) were given daily P.O. for 30 days. Vehicle treated groups of both male and female were also included. Administration of amiodarone in male rats triggered a mild state of hyperthyroidism which is manifested by a significant decrease in serum TSH along with a significant increase in T₄ levels
