Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology Summary: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic diseases caused by high blood sugar (glucose) levels that result from defect secretion, or action or both. Insulin enables cells to absorb glucose in order to turn it into energy. This causes glucose to accumulate in the blood (hyperglycaemia), leading to various potential complications. Type 2 diabetes is a global public health crisis that threatens the economies of all nations, particularly developing countries. Fueled by rapid urbanization, nutrition transition, and increasingly sedentary lifestyles, the epidemic has grown in parallel with the worldwide rise in obesity, and the disease may start very early when the obesity presents at childhood
