Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Biochemistry Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the third most common cause of death from cancer worldwide which accounts for 80% - 90% of primary liver cancer, is characterized by a very poor prognosis . Outcome of Hepatocellular carcinoma depends mainly on its early diagnosis. Serum Ü-fetoprotein (AFP) is the only marker that has been widely used for screening and diagnosis of HCCs. However, development of false-negative or false-positive rates with (AFP) was as high as 30% - 40% for patients with small hepatocellular carcinomas. Besides these features, a number of biological markers including cytokines and growth factors have been demonstrated to be increased in the sera of patients with HCC and may be associated with a poor prognosis. Thus the identification of novel biochemical markers for HCC remains an important goal for many laboratories around the world. Intercellular adhesion molecule {u2013} 1( ICAM - 1) is one of the positive prognostic markers secreted, abundantly in several human tumors including HCC
