Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Endodontics Summary: The aim of the present study is to emphasize the effect of ozone (Healozone) on the incidence of microorganisms in the root canal space, with radiographic monitoring in selected treated periapical lesions to detect radiographic variations of periapical density, using ozone in two different concentrations (30, 60 sec.). Thirty RCT cases were selected to be treated with the ozone, 15 cases for each (30 and 60 seconds application ).10 cases were selected to be treated with NaOCl as control group. The patients were divided into two study groups: Group 1 [30 patients] Group 1 then subdivided into two subgroups 15 patients each (whose root canals were subjected to Ozone for 30 sec.) while the other subgroup subjected to 60 sec. Group 2 control [10 patients]. The control group was irrigated with NaOCl 5.25 %. The antibacterial capacity of ozone on microorganisms associated with pulp necrosis and apical Infection the microorganism were exposed to several concentrations of ozone gas (30 sec. and 60 sec.) as well as the sodium hypochlorite solution (concentration 5.25%) for 2 minutes and the overall reduction in the number of bacteria shows marked reduction with the increase of the concentration of the ozone, i.e. the bacterial reduction with the sodium - hypochlorite 5.25% was almost 90% (the control sample) while the bacterial reduction after application of the ozone gas for 30 sec. was 95% and the bacterial reduction after application of ozone gas for 60 sec. was 98%
