Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Summary: Several studies have reported the protective effects of extracts of chamomile in different gastrointestinal tract disorders such as gastritis, oesophagitis, irritable bowel syndrome and colitis. Moreover, chamomile extracts were reported to guard against chemotherapy/radiotherapy induced oral mucositis owing to its anti-inflammatory activities and the ability to accelerate re- epithelialization. However, limited reports have emerged for the use of chamomile extracts in protecting against intestinal mucositis. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a specially formulated chamomile extract, MTC 102, in protecting against irinotecan-induced intestinal mucositis. The effect on oxidative stress was assessed by measuring MDA content and GSH/GSSG ratio. Furthermore, several inflammatory mediators were examined such as MPO activity, TNF-Ü, IL-1Ý, IL-10 and NF-mB levels. Additionally, caspase-3 activity as a marker for apoptosis was assessed. Finally, small intestinal segments with or without treatments were isolated for histopathological examination and scoring
