Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Orthopedic Surgery Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of non-inflammatory arthritis. Knee joint is the most commonly affected joint. It is a process of wear and tear of articular cartilage and represents failed attempt of chondrocytes to repair damaged cartilage. Most of the current treatments for osteoarthritis are palliative and attack the symptoms rather than influencing the biochemical joint environment such as exercise, weight loss, physical therapy, pain relief drugs, and intra-articular injection of corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid. Arthroscopic surgery has been shown to have no benefit in knee osteoarthritis. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous blood plasma with high platelets concentration. When injected intra-articular, platelets are activated and release several kinds of autologous growth factors such as TGF-Ý1, PDGF and other cytokines that enhance the healing process
