Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Maternal and Newborn Health Nursing Summary: The aim of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of reflexology relaxation technique regimen on pregnancy outcome among pregnant women with cardiac disease. A total of 98 women diagnosed with cardiac disease were recruited for this study. This purposeful sample was divided into two groups 49 each; the study group who receive reflexology technique and control group who received routine care at El- Manial University Hospital, Cairo, Egypt. Each group was assigned randomly to the line of management. A variety of tools were used to collect the study data: interviewing questionnaire schedule, partograph, visual analogue scale, Apgar score. Results indicated decrease in pain scores throughout the active phase of labor, decrease in usage of analgesia among laboring women who received reflexology technique In addition, the stages of labor were significantly shorter in duration among reflexology group than among the control group. Moreover, and Newborn babies of women who receive reflexology technique had higher Apgar scores. Findings showed that reflexology can be useful to decrease the pain intensity as well as duration of labor and better fetal outcome. The study recommended an urgent need for Training courses for the maternity nursing staff to raise and ensure knowledge, skills related to reflexology to be applied as pain relief during labor, collaboration should exist between the medical and the nursing staff in order to facilitate the utilization reflexology as non pharmacological measures and further researches on the effect of reflexology on cardiac disease, with large sample size, standardized techniques and measuring scales to show effect of reflexology on pain management during labor are needed
