Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology Summary: Background: Liver cancer is the third most frequent cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. It is fifth most common cancer in men worldwide and the seventh in women. The DNA repair pathways protect from carcinogenesis by repairing DNA damage. The X-ray cross complementing group 1 gene (XRCC1), located on chromosome 19 (19q13.2), is involved in the base excision repair (BER) pathway. The XRCC1 complex has also been described as part of an alternative route of DNA double-strand break (DSB) non homologous end-rejoining, i.e., poly (ADP ribose) polymerase 1(PARP1) dependent end-joining of DSBs. Aim of study: This study was done to assess the relationship between XRCC1 Arg399Gln polymorphism and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Subjects and methods: It was conducted on 100 subjects. They were divided into two groups: HCC group included 50 patients and Control group included 50 apparently healthy subjects
