Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Physical Chemistry
Due to the shortage and the environmental problems of fossil fuel, a future perspective use of solar energy is its combination with water and its consequent electrolysis for generation of hydrogen gas, which is another form of clean energy sources. One of the main problems facing the production of hydrogen via water electrolysis is the cathodic material. Thus, development of economic, but active cathode materials is important in order to make the electrolysis process more effective. The modification of the electrodeposited Ni-Fe alloys was carried out via the addition of zinc and its subsequent leaching in an alkaline solution. The electrocatalytic performances of the modified alloys for hydrogen evolution in alkaline media had been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and Tafel linear polarization. The optimal conditions for the preparation of a modified Ni{u2013}Fe cathode are listed as pH 5, temperature 25{u00B0}C and electroplating current density 45 mA.cm⁻²
