Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Physical Therapy - Department of Physical Therapy for Surgery
This study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle trainer and incentive spirometer on diaphragmatic strength after bariatric surgeries. Thirty patients (16 males and 14 females) underwent bariatric surgeries with ages ranged from 25-45 years were selected randomly and divided into two equal groups in number, each group contained 15 patients. Patients in group (A): received inspiratory muscle trainer in addition to traditional chest physical therapy intervention (Deep breath, cough training and early ambulation) while patients in group (B): received traditional chest physical therapy intervention and incentive spirometer. Patients in both groups were assessed before treatment (pre-training) and after treatment (post-training) (after 4 weeks) to measure maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) using respiratory pressure meter (RPM).Results: The results of this study showed that inspiratory muscle trainer was more effective approach in treatment of diaphragmatic weakness than incentive spirometer as proved through significant increase in maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) in group(A) than in group (B).Conclusion: It was concluded that inspiratory muscle trainer was more effective than incentive spirometer in treatment of diaphragmatic weakness than incentive spirometer
