Dissertation note: Thesis (PH.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Medicine - Department Of Urology Summary: One third of men older than 50 years will develop symptoms caused by BPH , and approximately 25 of men in this age group will eventually require surgical interventionTransurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is still the standard to which all modalities are comparedThe holmium laser enucleation of the prostate is a procedure for the treatment of BPH proved to be as safe and as effective as the gold standard modalities , namely transurethral resection of the prostate and open prostatectomyThe ability to treat any size gland with less bleeding and no TUR syndrome is an added advantageAnticoagulated patients can be treated more safelyAccording to our experience and other groups' experiences we can say that HoLEP is a strong alternative to TURP and open prostatectomy , which has been described as the gold standard treatment for BPH for more than 50 yearsHowever , long term follow - up is still needed
