Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Agriculture - Department of Agronomy Summary: This study was conducted during 2011 / 2012, 2012 / 2013 and 2013 / 2014 seasons. The faba bean, Vicia faba genotypes: Nubaria 1 (P₁ - major), Giza 40 (P₂ - equina), NA 112 (P₃ - paucijuga), camilina (P₄ - minor), spanish (P₅ - major) and Cairo 33 (P₆ - equina) were crossed in a diallel system excluding reciprocals, to widen genetic base, to estimate heterosis, GCA, SCA, correlation coefficient and to provide materials for selecting good combinations from segregating generations. The six parents, 15 F₁'s and 15 F₂{u₂₀₁₉}s were employed in the study. Characters studied were: germination (%), flowering date, maturity date, plant height, first pod height, branches per plant, pods per plant, seeds per plant, seed yield per plant, 100 - seed weight, seed dimensions (seed length, width, thickness and shape index) and hilum colour of seeds. Variability was observed among genotypes (parents and crosses). Paucijuga was short and flowered and matured latest. Giza 40 and Cairo 33 were the earliest. Seed yield and 100 seed weight and seed dimensions were in favour of major varieties. GCA and SCA effects differed in direction and magnitude in different traits. Hybrids performed better than averages of their parents. Heterosis and heterobeltiosis (F₁) showed great variation according to parental combinations and traits. Equina x major and equina x equina hybrids had useful heterobeltiosis for pods, seeds and seed yield
