Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Department of Microbiology Summary: Campylobacteriosis is a bacterial zoonosis transmitted from animals and birds to human contacts causing acute bacterial gastroenteritis. The current study aimed to conduct a surveillance of campylobacters among one day imported poultry. Isolation and characterization of campylobacter spp. were done by both traditional culture and PCR techniques. A total of 300 samples were collected from chicks (n = 100), turkey poults (n = 100) and duckling (n = 100). The highest rate of Campylobacter spp. was recorded in ducklings (37 %), followed by chicks (27%) and turkey poults (15%). So that, The overall prevalence of Campylobacter spp in studied samples by PCR techniques were (79 / 300) 26.3%, out of which were identified as 3 C. jejuni (3.8%) in duckling, 26C. coli (32.9%) 23 in duckling and 3 in chicks ,1 mixed C. coli and jejuni (1.3%) in duckling and as 49 (62%) non C.coli non jejuni in 10 in duckling, 24 in chicks and 15 in turkey poults. In vitro sensitivity of 26 strains of Campylobacter spp. were done against 13 different antibacterial agents. Among 26 isolates, 3 isolates of C. jejuni were resistant (100%) to trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole and pencillin, (33.3%) resistant to amoxicillin. while, C.coli isolates were resistant (100%) to trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole, pencillin, tetracycline, norfloxicin and doxycyclin, 77.3% to ciprofloxacin and 27.3% to oflaxacin
