Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Organic Chemistry Summary: The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is currently the most flexible and economically attractive method for the production of multi - walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This work investigates the synthesis and purification of MWCNTs, which were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X - ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Synthesis of MWCNTs was carried out by chemical vapor deposition, using Fe catalyst supported on SiO₂, Al₂O₃ and MgO. The used precursor was C₂H₂ - nitrogen mixture. The catalysts Fe / SiO₂, Fe / Al₂O₃ and Fe / MgO were prepared by sol - gel method. The as - synthesized MWCNTs showed product yields 972, 2791 and 3170 % gained on Fe / SiO₂, Fe / Al₂O₃ and Fe / MgO, respectively. The HRTEM data revealed that the produced MWCNTs had outer diameters in the range of 28.8 - 32.3 nm, the inter diameter 7.6 - 9.8 nm and wall numbers in the range of 29 - 33 graphenes. The TGA analysis indicated that the synthesized MWCNT are thermally stable up 500{u00BA}C. The prepared functionalized MWCNTs were incorporated into polyurethane with loadings 0.1 , 0.2 , 0.5 and 1.0 wt % to demonstrate the effect of MWCNTs on the morphological, thermal and conductivity properties
