Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Institute of African Research and Studies - Department of of Natural Resources
Chemical compounds, some physical properties and paper testing of 4 - woody tree species (populus alba, eucalyptus camaldulensis, cupressus sempervirens and acacia nilotica) grown in north Africa were evaluated. They were cut from the research farm of horticulture research Institute, while acacia nilotica was obtained from Egyptian agricultural museum, Giza at 11 years old.results showed that populus alba wood produced the highest value of cellulose compared with others under the study, while cupressus semprvirenes wood had the least one. Populous alba wood gave the highest value of pentosan content followed by both eucalyptus camaldulensis and cupressus sempervirens which gave the same value approximately whereas acacia nilotica wood gave the least one. Hemi - cellulose was the highest in wood of populus alba (36.69%), while cupressus sempervirens was the lowest one (9.69%). Holocellulose content in Populus alba significantly increased (83.63% ± 3.51) as over all the other studied species , whereas those of softwood represented in cupressus sempervirens significantly was decreased and attained the inferior value of 52.38% ± 2.15 compared to all hardwood studied species
