The present study was constructed in order to investigate the colonic response to iodoacetamide (IA) injection as a model for induction of UC in rats. The aim was extended to study the possible protective effects of GSE, NG and EA in comparison with sulfasalazine, as a standard anti-inflammatory drug, on IA-induced UC in rats. To achieve the goals of the present study, inflammatory markers such as colonic contents of prostaglandins E and total nitrate/nitrite as well as inducible 2 nitric oxide synthase were evaluated. Moreover, pro-inflammatory cytokines such as colonic tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interlukin -8 contents as well as colon myeloperoxidase activity as markers for neutrophils infiltration in response to IA were also estimated
