Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
The Goal of any surgeon treating L.C.P.D. is to improve upon the natural history of the disease. Containment whether surgical or non surgical has evolved as an effective line of treatment in achieving such goal. Salter{u00B4}s innominate osteotomy improves containment by redirecting the acetabulum such that the soft plastic femoral head is protected within the acetabulum in the weight bearing position. Eventually when healing us over, a round non-deformed head is the likely result. This is a retrospective study on the results of Salter's innominate osteotomy performed to patients with Perthes disease at the new children hospital of Cairo University. The material of this study included 30 patients with L.C.P.D. (26 males 4 females) on whom Salter osteotomy was performed, with an average age of 6.8 years (range 5-11 years). All patients had total involvement of the femoral head with or without head at risk signs. The period of follow up averaged 3.06 years (range1-10years). Assessment radiologically (using Mose and Stulberg classification) was done at the final follow up with revision of medical records of the patients. We concluded that Salter Osteotomy is safe and effective procedure in improving Perthes{u2019} disease. Positive correlation was between preserved range of motion preoperatively and Stullberg outcome. Patients who had preserved good range of motion preoperatively will get good outcome
