Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Patients and methods: 100 malnourished underweight children from both sexes, ranging in age from 6 to 12 years, and diagnosed as malnourished, were chosen from the malnutrition outpatient clinics of the preventive medicine new children hospital, Cairo university and National nutrition institute outpatient clinic during the period from July 2014 to December 2014. All the participants will be subjected to interview: A, B, C, D (A for anthropometric measures, B for biochemical studies, C for clinical assessment, and D for dietary assessment). History also included social status and detailed dietary history. Social status and history were taken from the parents. Clinical assessment, anthropometric assessment and some laboratory examination were also done (hemoglobin, iron level and stool analysis). Results: In the current study malnutrition was common in children who were males (56%) more than half of the cases, than girls (44%) less than half of the cases. On analysing the results of the present study, it was found that out of the 100 patients more than three fifth (67%) lived in urban areas and one third (33%) of them lived in rural areas. In the current study, from the 100 cases less than one third (28%) were wasted, more than two fifth (44%) underweight and more than half (53%) were stunted. In this study, it was observed that out of 100 patients, mother's educational level was school education in more than two fifth (42%) of the patients, institutional in less than one third (32%) and academic in more than one quarter (26%)
