Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Metallurgical Engineering Summary: The thesis is an endeavour for enhancing the abrasion resistance of 42CrMo4 and C45 steels through depositing of hardfacing alloys on the surfaces of the steels subjected to abrasion under different steels conditions. The hardfacing electrodes used are Din 8555 E10 - UM - 60 R and Din 8555 E6 - UM - 60 R. All the weld deposits were examined for their chemical composition, microstructure, hardness and wear resistance. Cushion layers were applied between the base metal and the hardfacing deposit using E 307 B electrode for the weld deposits that contained cracks. The results showed great enhancement in hardness measurements for 42CrMo4 and C45 steels when using both types of electrodes. Din 8555 E10 - UM - 60 R electrode is very effective for enhancing the wear resistance of both steels under investigation due to formation of chromium carbides. Cushion layers are effective in eliminating the base metal and interface cracks and decreasing the weld metal cracks
