Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Economics and Political Science - Department of Statistics Summary: Women{u2019}s relative lack of decision-making power and their unequal access to employment, finances, education, basic health care, and other resources are considered to be the root causes of their ill-health and that of their children. The main purpose of this study is to examine the interactive relation between women{u2019}s empowerment and the use of maternal health care and whether women{u2019}s empowerment and receiving maternal care are simultaneously determined. The recursive bivariate probit model and structural equation modeling (SEM) are used to achieve this goal. The results of these models show that women{u2019}s empowerment and receiving maternal care are simultaneously determined. A simulation is carried out to explore to what extent the researchers can depend on the results of Recursive Bivariate Probit rather than SEM when the endogenous variable is qualitative
