Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Background:- A palpable thyroid nodule is very common and usually a benign lesion, Malignancies have been found in 9-15% of the nodules that were evaluated with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy (Nam-Goong IS; et al, 2004). High resolution US is the most sensitive diagnostic imaging technique, recent studies support the expansion of it{u2019}s role for diagnosing malignanct thyroid nodules (Moon WJ; et al, 2009). FNAB is the gold standard for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules (HegedÜs L. 2004). Approximately 20{u2013}40% of FNABs yield undetermined cytological findings (Oertel YC;et al, 2002) consequently surgery is generally required in indeterminate FNAB, even though only 23% of them prove to harbor cancer based on surgical pathology (Sclabas GM;et al, 2003). Therefore, there is a need to find an assisting means for defining the diagnosis of thyroid cancer preoperative. Recent advances in molecular genetics of thyroid cancer can be applied to develop a new diagnostic markers for FNA samples (Fagin JA. 2005, Kondo T; et al, 2006)
