The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective role of the whey protein (WP) against the alloxan-induced oxidative stress and associated metabolic alterations in rats. Eighty male albino rats were divided into four groups: (i) control, (ii) alloxan-injected, (iii) (alloxan+WP)-treated and (iv) WP-administered groups. In the 2nd and 3rd groups, alloxan was intraperitoneally injected at a single dose level of 150 mg/kg b. wt., which is a diabetogenic dose. In the 3rd group, WP was orally administered at a dose level of 3.75 g/kg b. wt. daily for two weeks before alloxan injection and four weeks post-injection. In the 4th group, WP was orally administered to the animals daily for four weeks at dose level of 3.75 g/kg b. wt. From each group, five animals were weekly taken out for sampling of blood and tissues (pancreas and liver). The injection of a single dose of alloxan resulted in a macrocytic hypochromic anemia and leukopenia. Leukopenia was a direct consequence of the reduction in absolute counts of neutrophils and lymphocytes. However, eosinophil, basophil and monocyte counts were not significantly altered
