Nanomaterials based on chitosan, sulphur containing coat and magnetic nanoparticles were prepared, characterized and investigated as mercury adsorbents. Magnetic nanoparticles were prepared via chemical precipitation method. Magnetic/chitosan composites were prepared and coated by polymerization of thiophene on the surface of the composites. Thiophene derivative of chitosan was also prepared via schiff-base reaction. The presence of MNPs in the polymer matrix and polythiophene coating on the surface enhanced the ability of chitosan to adsorb mercury ions from the water samples from 33.2 mg/g for Cs. to 43.5mg/g for polythiophene coated Magnetic Chitosan composite while the polythiophene coated magnetite reached 48.2 mg/g. For the nanocomposites, the maximum uptake capacity was equal to 55.9 mg/g and adsorbs mercury ions from aqueous solutions in a wide range of pHs. Nanocomposites are found to be selective metal ions
