Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Civil Engineering Summary: Lateral deformations during earthquakes leads seismic codes to require that adjacent buildings should be separated by a minimum distance to avoid pounding. In this study, the Egyptian code formula for seismic gap calculation was investigated. Several case studies of adjacent buildings with different heights and periods of vibrations were used to check the consistency in results. First, non - linear analysis was performed to calculate the inelastic displacements of buildings; the results were used to evaluate the relation between elastic and inelastic displacements due to the ductility of resisting elements. Then, different criteria were used to calculate the minimum separation distance and results were compared to the Egyptian code. Last, a verification analysis was conducted to guarantee that no pounding occurred. Results obtained showed that the code overestimated the seismic gap, especially when adjacent buildings had close values for the periods of vibrations
