Phosphate rocks are used extensively, mainly as a source of phosphorus for fertilizers and further for phosphoric acid and other special chemicals. Phosphates are typically enriched in uranium and as such are one of the sources of technologically enhanced natural radiation (TE-NORM), which might increase exposure to man from natural radio nuclides. Because of the increasing use of phosphate in industry world wide, it is interesting to investigate the potential radioactivity exposure of phosphate ores. It is important to analyze phosphate ores for uranium content and elemental composition, because of the possible migration of elements from the fertilizers to soil and plants, and via the food chain, to human beings where this may results in health effects
