Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Operative Dentistry Summary: The aim of the study was to assess the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded with different adhesive systems containing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles, assess bond durability by measuring the shear bond strength after aging and examination of the interface using environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The AgNPs was synthesized and characterized by (UV - Vis) spectroscopy and TEM. Adper single bond 2 was used as the total etch adhesive and single bond universal adhesive was used as self etch adhesive. 96 teeth were divided into 80 teeth for shear bond strength test (20 teeth for each group) and 18 teeth for ultra - morphologic examination (Two representative samples of each group). For shear bond strength test 80 teeth were randomly divided into two equal groups according to the addition of silver nanoparticles (A); A1: teeth were bonded with adhesive not containing silver nanoparticles and A2: teeth were bonded with adhesive containing silver nanoparticles. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups: B1 (20 specimens): using total etch adhesive. B2 (20 specimens): using self-etch adhesive. Each subgroup was subdivided into 2 classes: C1 (10 specimens): 24 hours aging period. C2 (10 specimens): 3months aging period in artificial saliva. Finally two representative samples of each group were analyzed using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) for interfacial analysis. After 24 hours aging, there was non significant difference between both total etch and self etch adhesive without addition of silver nanoparticles
