Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - National Cancer Institute - Department of Oncology (Surgical) Summary: This study was done to assess the risk factors and causes of postoperative hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy for cancer thyroid, to evaluate the parathyroid injury (iatrogenic devascularisation and truma), to evaluate whether the hypocalcemia is temporary or permanent , management of hypocalcemia, and to assess the success of parathyroid autotransplant. This study included 94 patients underwent thyroidectomy (total &completion) for cancer thyroid. 42 patients were followed by a prospective study including 6 patients suffered hypocalcemia & 52 patients including 16 patients suffered from postoperative hypocalcemia were followed by a retrospective study. Preservation of parathyroid glands and their blood supply was attempted in all cases
