Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electrical Power and Machines Summary: The proposed wind power generation system consists of a low speed permanent magnet generator coupled directly to a wind turbine and connected to the grid using full scale back to back power electronics converter. The system is modeled in per unit and simulated for different scale machines at changeable wind speed conditions to achieve maximum power and quality for grid connection. The control system includes turbine controllers, machine-side converter controllers, and the grid-side converter controllers. This thesis presents modeling, simulation, and implementation of space vector pulse width modulation as a switching technique for both machine-side and grid-side converters. An experimental setup is used to verify the simulation results utilizing low speed 1 kW permanent magnet generator driven by induction motor. A controlled IGBT rectifier is used to control the machine and chopped resistor is used to consume all generated power and to emulate a DC grid performance. The designed control system is developed using Matlab/Simulink and implemented in the experimental work using DS1104 Controller Board to interface measurements and IGBT converters. The experimental work proves the validity of the control algorithm and system design
