Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Biophysics Summary: Oxidative damage induced by Argon laser treatment (photocoagulation) can irreversibly damage the retina tissues. Retina is extremely rich in polyunsaturated lipids; this makes it particularly sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Grape seed proanthocyanidins extract (GSPE) is a widely consumed dietary supplement that has the capability to scavenge oxidants and free radicals and also it has low toxicity and no genotoxic potential. The present study investigated the protective effect of GSPE on ROS produced due to argon laser photocoagulation. Results showed that GSPE supplementation reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in the ocular tissue, FT - IR results as well as histological findings showed a positive result for GSPE in reducing laser effects on the retinal tissue. GSPE has an extremely beneficial role in overcoming the resultant adverse biological effects of argon laser photocoagulation on retinal tissues, due to its potent antioxidant properties
