Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Dermatology and venerology Summary: Background T helper (Th) 17 cells have recently been described as a third subset of T helper cells, and have provided new insights in various immune responses essential for effective antimicrobial host defense. T-helper 17 cells are characterized by the production of IL-17, which is important for neutrophil recruitment and host defense against extracellular bacteria and fungi. Aim of work: The aim of the present study is to highlight the role of T-helper 17cells in both fungal and viral infections by estimating the tissue level of IL-17 and its receptor in tinea versicolor and verruca vulgaris patients. Results: The present study revealed significantly higher tissue level of interleukin 17 (8.584 ± 2.1715) and its receptor (1.538 ± 0.6659) in fungal group and in viral group (7.097 ± 2.1648) and (1.139 ± 0.4496) when compared with the control group (1.224 ± 0.4086) and (0.133 ± 0.0347). Furthermore statistically significant positive correlation was detected between the tissue level of IL17 and its receptor among both groups. Also significant positive correlation was detected between number of warts and IL17 level
