Laser surface hardening is an effective technique to improve the tribological properties of the cast iron componentsExcimer laser was used at different power (24 , 3 , 5 mj) and different number of pulses to treat the surface layer of cylindrical test specimensIt was found that the laser surface treatment increased the hardness of the ductile cast iron sample by 68 , and decreased the friction coefficient and wear loss of the ductile cast iron by 20Small difference between experimental and predicted volumetric wear lossThe microstructural change of the treated samples was also studied , the ferrite pearlite matrix transformed to martensiteThe treated microstructure contains graphite nodules , martensite , and retained austeniteThe hardened depth increased with increasing laser processing parameters
