Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness in the world, is estimated to be suffered by 70 million people. Glaucoma is an ophthalmic disorder characterized by an increase in intraocular pressure, which results in a damage to the ganglion cells and the optic nerve and visual field disturbances. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is a function of production of liquid aqueous humor by the ciliary processes of the eye, and its drainage through the trabecular meshwork. The modern goal of glaucoma management is to avoid damage of the optic nerve by the raised intraocular pressure to preserve visual field and total quality of life for patients with minimal side effects. Agents used to treat glaucoma are designed to decrease intraocular pressure. These drugs limit aqueous humor production in the ciliary body and / or enhance aqueous outflow through the trabecular meshwork or the uveoscleral pathway. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are amongst the most powerful agents to lower IOP. They lower secretion of aqueous humor by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary body
