Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Nursing Services Administration Summary: Background: With the development in educational technologies and the widespread of distance learning, and e-learning in recent years. As a consequence to this development, the new learning environment has been acknowledging nursing students self-directed learning. Aim: The current study was carried out to assess undergraduate nursing students' readiness for self-directed and e-learning. Design: descriptive/ cross sectional study design was used to achieve the aim of present study. Setting: the study was conducted at Faculty of Nursing {u2013} Cairo University. Sample: a convenient sample (573) of nursing student all over the four academic levels at faculty of nursing was used. Tools: data were collected by using modified Self-directed learning readiness scale and modified E-learning readiness questionnaire. Results: more than half of undergraduate nursing students have high readiness level for self-directed learning, while less than half of undergraduate nursing students had moderate readiness level for e-learning. Recommendations: the current study recommended that the importance of encouraging self-directed learning among students, create a risk free environment of learning to help the student to contribute, express their opinions, not embarrassed by mistakes, and promote risk taking. Also, the importance of designing curricula that can be taught using e-learning methods, and teaching scientific materials online {u2013} experimentally at first {u2013} to measure the response of the students and teachers to this modern technology
