Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Nursing Services Administration Summary: Background: Safe patient care was directly and positively linked to the quality of staff nurses{u2019} work environments. Increasingly, professional organizations are challenging nurses, hospital administrators, and health care organizations to improve the practice environment for staff nurses in order to reap the benefits, particularly patients{u2019} safety and nurses{u2019} job satisfaction and retention Aim: The current study seeks to compare between ISO: 9001-2008 certified and non-certified hospitals regarding healthy work environment and patient safety culture from the nursing staff{u2019} point of view. Design: A descriptive, comparative study design was utilized to achieve the aim of the present study. Setting: The study was conducted at the New Kasr El-Aini Teaching Hospital and El Manial Specialized Hospital. Sample: Convenient samples of (180) staff nurses working at the ICUs in New Kasr El-Aini Teaching Hospital (ISO 9001- 2008certified hospital) and (90) staff nurses working at the ICUs in El Manial Specialized Hospital (ISO 9001-2008 non-certified hospital) were included in the study. Tools: data was collected by a modified patient safety culture and healthy work environment questionnaires. The results: there was a significance statistical difference regarding nurses perception of patient safety culture and healthy work environment between intensive care units which affiliated to ISO 9001-2008 certified hospital and ISO9001-2008 non-certified hospital. Recommendations: The study recommended continuous monitoring of managers by raising awareness of hospital staff about the patient safety culture and elements of healthier work environment. Moreover, providing training on teamwork, continuous improvement, hospital handoffs, adverse event reporting and education about communication skills
