Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Electrical Power and Machines Summary: This research develops an energy rating system for existing buildings using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Nine energy criteria were identified from international green building rating systems and then a survey was conducted among engineering professionals for their relative priority, and to determine the mandatory and optional criteria. Using AHP, relative weights are developed for the optional criteria. To verify the positive impact, a case study office building was modeled and simulated using software. The results demonstrated a reduction of 26% in the annual electricity costs, and 14.2% in the peak electrical power required by the building
