Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: In the course of searching for new safe and effective hormone replacement therapies, the two plants Iris pseudacorus L. and Trifolium alexandrinum L. were selected in accordance to the previous reports of isoflavonoids possessing estrogenic activity isolated from related species. A bioassay guided study was conducted including in-vitro and in-vivo estrogenic assays for the isolation and the identification of active compounds. The polar extract of Trifolium alexandrinum L. aerial parts as well as the isolated luteolin-7-O-glucoside showed promising estrogenic activity in the in-vivo studies whereas the polar extract of Iris pseudacorus L. leaves showed potent estrogenic activity in the in-vitro study. The results are persuading to move forward in doing the clinical trials on human after accomplishing the required toxicity studies
