Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Anatomy
In modern surgical and transplantation procedures the recognition of anatomic vascular variations of the celiac artery is of greater importance than ever. The knowledge of the type of anatomical variants and their subtypes is fundamental for a correct pre-operative vascular planning in surgical or radiological abdominal procedures. Multidetector CT (MDCT) provides high-quality 3D-reconstructed images and allows non-invasive assessment of normal anatomy and anatomic variants of celiac trunk. The present study was designed to evaluate and assess the incidence of different anatomical variations of the celiac trunk and its three branches. The present study was carried out on 131 MDCT angiographic scans (82 males and 49 females) obtained from the radiology Department, Kasr AlAiny Hospital and 12 human adult cadavers (8 males and 4 females) obtained from the Anatomy Department, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University were used. The present study revealed that in 97 cases (67.8%) out of total 143 cases, had the classical celiac trifurcation and showed that the common hepatic artery was seen arising from superior mesenteric artery in 4.2% of studies cases and common hepatic artery from abdominal aorta artery in 2.8% of cases ,the left hepatic artery was arising from the left gastric artery in 2.8% of cases, right hepatic artery was originating from the superior mesenteric artery in of cases , the left hepatic artery was arising from the left gastric artery in of cases and the gastroduodenal artery arising from celiac trunk in 2.8% of cases
