Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacongnocy Summary: Morus nigra and Bauhinia variegata have been used traditionally for the treatment of diabetes. Morus nigra leaves extract (BMLE) is rich in phenolic compounds (chlorogenic acid and quercetrin) and alkaloid DNJ. The extract has also significant antioxidant activity. The ethanolic extract is safe at doses up to 9 g/kg. The extract has also significant Ü-glucosidase inhibitory activity and antibacterial activity against S. aureus, B. subtilis and E. coli and antifungal activity against A. fumigates. At two different doses (250-500 mg//kg), BMLE can significantly lower the FBG, increase serum insulin level and improve kidney and liver functions. The black mulberry fruits are rich in sodium, potassium calcium and magnesium. Morus nigra fruits extract (BMFE) is also rich in phenolic acids, flavonoids and anthocyanins of the cyanidin type. BMFE showed good antioxidant activity. BMFE showed weak Ü-glucosidase inhibitory effect and good antimicrobial activities with MIC comparable to standard drug. The ethanolic extract is safe at doses up to 13.5 g/kg. At 250 mg / kg, the extract significantly lowered FBG, increased serum insulin level and improved kidney and liver functions. The Bauhinia variegata leaves extract is rich in flavonoids (rutin) and phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, cinnamic acid and ferulic acid). The extract showed good antioxidant activity. The extract showed good Ü-glucosidase inhibitory effect, antibacterial activity against S. aureus, B. subtilis and S. typhimurium and antifungal activity against A. fumigatus
