Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation
The medical records of 770 patients diagnosed with SLE, who were admitted to or came for follow up visits at the Department of Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, Kasr AlAiny, were retrospectively reviewed in this study. Patients with drug induced lupus were excluded. Results Our cohort consisted of 707 (91.82%) women and 63 (8.18%) men (female to male ratio, 11:1). Mean age at onset of symptoms attributable to SLE was 22.11 ± 8.62 years and mean disease duration was 6.08 ± 4.47 years. The most frequent SLE manifestation was arthritis (80.26%), followed by acute cutaneous lupus (70.39%), nephritis (67.79%), and hematologic involvement (64.94%). The prevalence of autoantibodies in our cohort was as follows: ANA (94.28%), anti-dsDNA (74.78%), anti-Sm (11.04%), aCL (29.48%), LAC (19.84%). Overall, 43.77% of our patients developed infections, predominantly bacterial (83.38%). Thirty three (4%) patients in our cohort were deceased, with a mean age at death 32.89 ± 10.9 years, with the most common cause of mortality being sepsis (39.39%) followed by disease activity (30.30%).Conclusion This is a single center cohort study of Egyptian SLE patients, who were found to have clinical disease spectra that are similar to those described in SLE patients from neighboring Arab countries and Caucasian populations
