Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Surgical Nursing Summary: Literature review cited that burn injuries lead to one of the most intense and prolonged pain that might affect patient's quality of sleep which in turn disturbing burn patient's condition. One of the crucial roles of burn nurse is assessing patient's pain and sleep as well as noting subtle changes on patient's health conditions. To assess the relationship between pain intensity and quality of sleep among patients with burn injury. A descriptive/ correlational design was utilized. Research question: Is there a relationship between pain intensity and quality of sleep among patients with burn injury? The current study was conducted in burn unit at one of the governmental hospital in Egypt. A convenience sample of 122 adult male and female inpatient diagnosed with burn injury were included in the study. Tools of data collection: tool 1: Socio-demographic and medical data sheet, tool 2: quality of sleep assessment questionnaire, tool 3: assessment of pain intensity using numerical rating scale (NRS). The current study revealed that the majority of the studied sample had worst pain after wound dressing and physiotherapy. Most of the subjects had moderate pain at night. Nearly all of subjects had sleep disturbance after hospitalization with burn injury and most common causes were pain, fear of unknown, change appearance and change environment. Most of sample reported poor night sleep. Pain intensity has a profound effect on quality of sleep among patients with burn injuries
