Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Chemotherapy is associated with adverse effects and high mortality in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially in patients over 60 years. It is suggested that short-term outcome depends largely on the age and physical performance of patients. Performance status using Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and physical functions (grip strength, chair stands and 2-minute walk test) were measured in 50 adult and elderly Egyptian AML patients prior to receiving IC. A scoring system was created using the individual data collected and its association with the treatment outcome was evaluated on Day 28 and Day 60, after starting chemotherapy. Outcomes included complete remission (CR), non-complete remission (NCR), relapse (R) or mortality (D). Results indicate that score, performance status and physical functions were predictive of remission on Day 28 and the overall survival on Day 60. Age was not a good predictor of remission status on Day 28, but was a good predictor of survival on Day 60
