Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Veterinary Medicine - Department of Veterinary Hygiene and Management
Microorganism's contamination in ostrich farms has serious impacts on the quality and growth performance of ostrich. This study was conducted to examine the bacterial contamination of an ostrich environment, hatcheries and hatching eggs. Additionally, the inhibitory effects of some commercial disinfectants on isolated microbes . Our results indicated that, there were significant differences (P < 0.05) among all microbial loads in different production sector. The overall prevalence of E. coli and Salmonella in all examined samples (445 samples) was 50 and 9.3% respectively. The most predominant serotypes of E. coli were the serotype of E. coli obtained from positive E.coli sample was O44:K74 (68 strain) O125:K70 (47strain), O126:K71(50 strain) O128:K67 (56 strain) and finally Autoaglutination (un typeable) (28 strain). While, the most predominant serotypes of Salmonella were the serotype of Salmonella spp. obtained from positive Salmonella sample was S. Agama (17 strain) S. Agona (19 strain), S. wingrove (16 strain) S. Kentucky (22 strain) and finally Autoaglutination (un typeable) (8 strain). The evaluation of 4 commercial disinfectants against E.coli (O126) show direct killing of bacteria with 1 min. contact time in presence of organic matter in all teste disinfectants except Ground Zero® (Iodophore 3.5% and glutraldhyde 3%).While the only disinfectant can fulfill the reduction level of S.Kentucky with 1 min. contact time in the presence of organic matter was VirKon-S
