Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology Summary: Over the last decade, Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) hasemerged as an important cause of health care associated infections in many parts of the world. Of great concern is the recent remarkable rise in the frequency of carbapenem non-susceptible A. baumannii. Typing methods can distinguish outbreak strains from epidemiologically unrelated strains thus facilitating the application of infection control measures properly. Multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) is a highly discriminative method for typing microorganisms and has been applied successfully for the epidemiologic characterization of a variety of bacterial pathogens, offering the possibility of inter-laboratory transfer of data and comparison of results via the internet. Data are deficient about propagating sequence types (ST) in Egyptian hospitals. The aim of the present study was to type clinical isolates of carbapenem non-susceptible A. baumannii collected from patients admitted to Kasr Al-Aini hospital diagnosed as having health-care associated infection and we compared them with isolates from different countries using MLST
