Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Family Medicine
Background: The common cold is the most commonly encountered infectious disease of human beings, and the most frequent illness managed in general Practice. The essentiality of zinc and its deficiency in humans were recognized in the early 1960s. Dietary zinc intake declines with advancing age. Zinc is involved in the immune response to infection and inhibits rhinovirus replication in vitro led to the proposal of zinc as a treatment for the common cold. Objective: To study the effect of zinc on the severity, duration of symptoms and incidence of complications of common cold in elderly (>60years). Patients and methods: This study was a prospective, interventional, single blind, placebo controlled study in elderly (>60years) of any symptom of common cold. 106 patients were randomized from elderly homes to take either zinc capsules or placebo for maximally 7 days. The median IQR of total symptom scoring in day 3 and 5 was compared between the two groups. Results: The reduction in total symptom scoring from baseline in day 5 was significantly greater in zinc group than in placebo group. Nasal discharge, sneezing, cough, fever and muscle ache, resolved faster in zinc group (3-5days) than in placebo group (5-7days). There was (15%) of patients in zinc group need to use antibiotic for secondary bacterial infection, while in placebo group the percent was (32%). Conclusion: Zinc is helpful in reducing the duration and severity of common cold symptoms in elderly and decrease the incidence of complication with no adverse effects
