Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Clinical and Chemical Pathology Summary: With the increase in the use of carbapenems, the number of resistant bacteria with different resistance mechanisms is rising. Some resistance mechanisms include deactivating antibiotics, altering or producing excessive amount of drug target receptors by protein gene mutation, acquiring a new gene that produces insusceptible target, reducing the permeability of cell membrane to antibiotics and also removing active drug from periplasm or from inside of cell. Among the most important resistance mechanisms against carbapenem is producing carbapenemase The increased worldwide spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) emphasizes the need for a sensitive screening procedure to identify these microorganisms.Gastrointestinal carriers may serve as the reservoir for cross-transmission in the health care setting, and thus active surveillance is a key part in preventing the spread of such strains.Method: in our study a new Chrom ID CARBA AGAR (Biomerieux) was used for rapid detection of CRE cases in different departments of Abo elreish hospital. Results and conclusion: It was found that the prevalence of CRE carriers is 70 % in different departments. The sensitivity of Chrom ID CARBA AGAR was 100 % and the Specificity was 80 %
